Step-by-step guide on reaching Majuli Island from Guwahati — by road, ferry, and air. Includes timings, costs, and travel tips for 2026.
Majuli, the world’s largest river island, sits in the middle of the Brahmaputra in Assam — and getting there is part of the adventure. Most travelers start their journey from Guwahati, Assam’s main airport hub. Here’s exactly how to do it.
Route Overview:
There is no bridge to Majuli. The only way in is by ferry across the Brahmaputra, which means your journey has two legs: Guwahati to Jorhat (by road or air), then Jorhat to Majuli (by ferry).
Step 1: Guwahati to Jorhat
By Air: Jorhat has its own airport (Rowriah) with daily flights from Guwahati, roughly 45 minutes. This is the fastest option if you’re short on time.
By Road: A private cab or bus takes about 6–7 hours covering roughly 310 km. Buses run from Guwahati’s ISBT, and shared cabs are easy to arrange. This route lets you see rural Assam along the way.
By Train: Overnight trains connect Guwahati to Jorhat, useful if you’d rather sleep through the journey and arrive fresh.
Step 2: Jorhat to Majuli (Nimati Ghat)
From Jorhat, it’s about a 30–40 minute drive to Nimati Ghat, the main ferry point. Government ferries run several times a day; the crossing itself takes around an hour depending on river conditions. Private boats are also available if you miss the scheduled ferry.
Best Time to Travel This Route:
Avoid the monsoon months (June–September) when ferry schedules can be disrupted by high water levels. October to March offers the calmest crossings and clearest river views.
Practical Tips:
Book ferry tickets a day ahead during festival season (especially around Raas Leela)
Carry cash — card payments are unreliable once you’re on the island
Start early; the last ferry back to the mainland leaves in the afternoon
